Back when I was in high school there was a neighbor by the name of Herk.
He was one of the most capable people I ever met. He was a signal electrician
for the Pennsylvania Railroad and was very direct in how he handled things. A
mockingbird had taken up residence in the willow tree just outside their
bedroom window and would sing loudly in the early morning hours. One morning
Herk had had enough. The bird began singing, then the bedroom window flew open
and there was a blast from a double-barreled shotgun. Feathers everywhere.
His wife, Thelma, was not aware that he was going to do this and in her fright
ended up virtually glued to the ceiling. It remained a significant episode in
the neighbourhood folklore even after he passed away.
