Olympus’ fire sale slogan is almost as embarrassing as that classic Japanese
mistranslation seen in a hotel room: “You are invited to take advantage of the
chambermaid.“
Our existing Olympus cameras and lenses will continue to work just fine. The
question is whether they will be repairable in a year or two or three. That
depends on whether JIP and some vaporous potential buyer will save the brand,
or if JIP plans to gut Olympus and sell off the entrails. The bigger question
is whether Panasonic will relish the role of micro 4/3 monopolist, or decide,
like Sylvester, to “Exit, stage left.”
Anybody got any tea leaves to read?
