To say that the Atlantic tropical storm picture is a mess may be an
understatement. Right now, two storms, Paulette and Rene, are strengthening.
Paulette will hit Bermuda on Monday as a category 2 storm, then make a hard
right turn to the northeast as it runs into the jet stream.

Rene is interesting. On Monday it will make a hard left turn and head
towards Puerto Rico.

Late this afternoon a tropical depression formed southeast of Miami. It
will cross Florida tomorrow and pass over Tampa Bay. It will strengthen to a
tropical storm and then head towards Biloxi.

And then there's storm #4, which is still disorganised southwest of the
Cape Verde islands. The low and the tropical wave are at the far eastern end
of a large area of storm activity. It just barely appears on GFS after next
weekend, and it's really difficult to say what this one will do as it skirts
along the south edge of the band of high pressure systems. We've had a number
of storms like this in recent years where they just gain strength over the
Caribbean and then pass through a weak spot in the high pressure band. Storms
such as these have turned into real monsters, like Katrina and Michael.
