I remember Wayne, another Decie on this list. I started in the semiconductor
group in 1983. I really enjoyed the intellectual stimulation of all the people
there. It was fun the level of creativity allowed.
My wife, before I knew her, met Ken Olsen on a plane flight once. She was
pregnant, (her first marriage) and very uncomfortable. Ken gave up his first
class seat to her. Later, he sent her a fruit basket at the resort they went
to. Perhaps if he was a more ruthless person, DEC might still exist. On the
other hand, his great character, he and Gordon Bell, attracted some great
talent. It was the political infighting below them that became the problem.
I can only imagine all the internal dynamics that may have been, is, happening
at Olympus.
Dec had a lot of good intellectual assets. So does Olympus. It may now be in
the process of repackaging that to make it re-sellable??
But innovation never sits still, it is (as the oracle would say) always
changing. If there is resistance to change, a company can become a bit stiff.
I'm wonder if Nikon will follow?
