[OM] Monitor setup and calibration

I know I don't have my monitors correctly setup.

There is a website to help you adjust your monitor.
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

There is also the standard control panel basic calibration.

But I'm at a loss getting things correct. If I set the monitor up to match
gamma and contrast the monitor feels very bright to me and my eyes. I'm curious
how others handle their monitor settings.
I have U2717D monitor and Nvidia graphics card. The Nvidia comes with a control
panel allowing adjustment to the brightness, contrast, gamma and can be
adjusted for individual color as well. The monitor has a number of presets. I
typically use Paper preset when programming as it seems easier on my eyes, but
renders photos a bit too dim. One of the reasons I see Moose's images as a bit
dark, which is not true if I use standard mode. if I use standard mode, white
paged websites are blinding.

One can set some things via control panel, the Nvidia control panel, and the
monitor itself.

Can a color calibrator get the gamma, contrast, etc correct?
Is it worth getting a color calibrator?
What monitor and setup do you use?
Does using Cleartype setting in windoes affect photos?

I know we can all argue about the subtle qualities of color, but variation in
monitor settings seems to out way anything else. I'm at a loss how to get
things best for photos?
