I second Matthias' opinion of the 5.6/400.  I bought one in Canon mount in
1991 for a year of wildlife research in Ghana and found it to be very
poorly built with lots of play in the focussing ring.  The latter moved
backwards and forwards and I could get infinity sharpness at two very
different positions.  Extremely annoying lens. 
 Go with the Tokina 5.6/400 which is
perhaps the best low-cost 400.  Or invest in a used Novoflex 5.6/400
follow-focus (especially for hand-held shots) or the 4/400 Tamron that has
gotten raving reviews on this list recently.
