I believe you may be making the same mistake many seem to, namely comparing an 
f2.8 
lenses performance at f2.8 with an f2 lenses performance at f2.  One should 
compare such lenses at equivalent apertures. If you do this, going by Gary's 
tests, 
the f2 seems to have slightly better performance from f2.8 to f8 but after that 
the 
f2.8 pulls ahead.
