Hi Tom!

>I ran across a used T-10 today. What is a fair price? Unit has power
>pack and cord/ringlight head...

I got what I considered a good deal: $125 for the T Power Control and $160
for the T-10. I saw the T Power Control go for over $200 on eBay recently,
but I think my price on the T-10 is closer to fair market price. These came
from Ace Camera, from their web site.

At the sime time, I got a cross-polarizer for $125. These seem to be pretty
rare and pricey. I know Ken Hansen (NYC) had one on his shelf a couple
weeks ago, but I didn't see a price.

A photo I did with the T-10, x-polarizer combo is at
<http://www.bytesmiths.com/Art_Gallery/05390_23.jpg>. You can still see the
ringlight reflection, but it is MUCH less that without the x-polarizer, and
the exposure is much more accurate.

>No power source for the modeling lights.

With a little electronics experience, this is easy to handle. It uses a
standard DC plug you can get at Radio Shack to supply 6 VDC to the
modelling lamps. I use a 4 D cell holder I stole from a caver's headlamp
wired to the DC plug. Total cost: under $20. Of course, if you're a
collector, you'll have to pay an outlandish price for the official Olympus
battery pack.

>Unit flashes but no way to check out the unit for ttl operation.

Make sure either you get a warranty, or it's a truly great price, or
they'll let you flash it on your camera. In the latter case, you can easily
tell if TTL is functional (if not accurate), by measuring the re-charge
time difference between flashing it into a big room with a small aperature,
and flashing it at a white surface from a few inches with a large
aperature. The latter cycle time should be a couple seconds at most,
whereas the former may take 30 seconds to recharge.

Let me know if you want further info on any of the above. Good luck!

BTW: if you see a T-8 or T-28 twin for a reasonable price, please let me know!
