I've had this lens for just over a year now and have been extremely
pleased with it. I've only been seriously into photography for 2 or 3
years and thus haven't owned or used enough lenses to be able to give
an expert opinion, but the Tamron is certainly as sharp or sharper
than any other lens I have. I'm interested in mosses and other small
plants and have used the lens a lot at near 1:1 with excellent
results. It's also a great general purpose medium focal length lens
and the results I've had shooting at longer distances have been
excellent too.
The lens is quite bulky (about 9.75cm long with adaptall attached,
and fairly wide) and looks a bit incongruous hanging off an OM1n -
I've got the MF version which is bigger than the AF one I think. The
construction is an interesting compromise between traditional and
modern, with the inner barrel (in which the glass is mounted) made
out of hard plastic and the outer barrel/chasis of some metal alloy.
The only problem I've had with my lens is that the focusing fairly
quickly developed a tendency to drift slightly when the lens was
held vertically downwards. As it was still under warranty when this
happened I had it sent back to Tamron for tightening and it's now
fine, although I'm worried that with use it's going to loosen up
again and eventually require expensive servicing. One thing about the
adaptall mount - the depth of field preview is a flat sliding
lever rather than the traditional OM push-button, which I personally
find a little bit fiddly. It does make it easy to gradually stop
the lens down, however.
