My theory is that DOF for a given distance and aperture depends on:
 W -  Effective width of aperture (e.g. in mm)
 E -  Degree of enlargement of negative

DOF decreases as W increases and E decreases.

So ideally, you use a pinhole and reduce the negative when making the 
print.
