My 300 is my primary outdoor sports lens (and the length I see most
often in use by other pros shooting the same events). I don't think
its any harder to focus than any other focal length one you've gotten
used to the weight.

Monopods and 300s can be a lightning fast combination. Again, a
little practice (and a socer mom will get plenty by the end of teh
season), and shooting a 300 on a monopod can feel as natural as
shooting a hand held 50.

Key to the process is learning topredict where the action will occur,
pre-focus, and wait for teh action to come to you. Although I get a
lot of"grab" shots, my best shots invariably come from anticipating
the action.
