Lex, in response to your "Never, never, never", I have to add an
"except...".
My OM1 advance lever started jamming on caving trip. While slamming the
camera against the heel of my palm worked most of the time, I started
getting bruises before we finished the cave, and didn't really think it
was that good for the camera! Luckily a member of the trip repairs
catscan and MRI machines for a living, so I borrowed a small screwdriver
from the toolbox in his car (he came on the 3 day caving trip straight
from work!). I wiped the major red mud clumps off the camera, and soon
had the bottom plate off. It wasn't too hard to work out which part of
the mechanism was jamming, add a tiny drop of silicon lubricant and work
it into the gears. Pop the bottom plate back on, fire off a few frames,
put in a new film, and I was back down in the dirt, squeezing my way
through tunnels, abseiling through tiny holes into dark nothingness and
blinding people with my flash on a PC cord where they weren't expecting
it. More than a year down the track, it's still smooth as butter and
hasn't missed a beat.
JohnH may be great, but there are times when only on the spot service
counts, and the only person to do it is you...
Dylan - thank god it wasn't a wonderbrick or I woulda been screwed!
