Oops, I forgot to mention that I have installed brand new batteries (I don't
remember the type, but they are varta photo batteries if that's significant) in
the body, and it behaves similarly. I've also checked the terminals for
cleanliness.

        First thing, as always with an OM, is to try new. *fresh* 357 silver
oxide 
        batteries. Your symptoms sound a lot like marginal batteries, although
it 
        seems odd that the problem would happen after the camera's been idle for

        awhile. You would expect the opposite affect (camera is OK for a while, 
        fails, then is OK again after the batteries have had some time to
recover)., 
        But if you haven't tried fresh batteries you should do that first. Also
make 
        sure your contacts in teh battery chamber are clean.
