Nigel,
It is very light and it takes good pictures. I find it most satisfying for me
in handheld sessions. I would prefer my 35-105 or a 50 for any situation
where I have time and tripod. Lastly, it's a little dark if you're using a
1-series screen, as any slow lens will be.
But for what it is, it's truly great. I love it.
