Gee where do you guys learn all these?? Or how do you manage to find the

Titoy,

Understanding what Paul posted and knowing what the gaps were that he left out dusted off my Physics degree. The rest . . . knowing what diffraction limiting is and its practical application to camera optics was gained by studying the technical aspect of photography. IMO the theory and math might be esoteric (and unnecessary), but the practical application and end results aren't. Knowing you will get into trouble stopped down too far and a little about why is important to optimizing the technical aspect of an image. Doesn't replace creativity and artistic vision, but it does facilitate carrying out that vision to make it a photograph.

Diffraction limiting from small apertures seems to kick in sooner and with greater prominence with the shorter focal lengths than with the longer ones.
