For flash photos in manual mode you should set your shutter speed to no faster than 1/60th on all Olympus camera bodies.

You can achieve underexposure by several methods:

1. Decrease the aperture setting.. ie. higher f number, for the given distance.
2. Use a neutral density filter on the lens or flash.
