[OM] I Pulled a "Real Stupid"

I hate to admit it, but as of today you all may use the expression "I pulled
a real Susan" to connote SHEER STUPIDITY. Why??

Yesterday I attended a trade show and always take along a small, lightweight
tote bag into which I put the floor map, a bottled water, and my digital
camera. I was out of bottled water and grabbed a bottle of Coke instead. You
may be guessing already...yes, the cap somehow came off and dumped into the
tote, which, because of an interior rubberized coating was holding the fluid
like a lake...and my camera was totally immersed for perhaps 5 minutes before
a dripping down my leg made me think that perhaps either my water had broken
or I had a kidney problem (just a bit of grossness included to indicate my
mood over this..)...you can imagine my horror when I pulled it out and
fluid...WAIT..not just fluid...but SUGARY SYRUPY COKE was flowing from it's
cavities. Needless to say, after shaking and wiping and cussing and
hyperventilating, the camera was dead as a doornail. I changed the batteries,
I tried everything. No camera. I went ahead and "did" the show but i don't
remember much as my mind was obviously elsewhere. While I've had it 2 years
and it's only 1.6 megapixels, it is very disheartening to know you massacred
a good camera so fooishly. I missed it immediately.

Hours later I got home and took it out..still dead. I figured..what have I to
lose..and got out the optical screwdrivers. I took it apart..and it was quite
a complicated newfangled mass inside. I swabbed with alcohol, took out all
the pools of brown that I could find, all the while terrified I'd never get
it all back together...them thangs are complicated. Every time a little
thingee would fall off I'd jump with fear as i didn't know where it came
from! Finally I squeezed it all back and put back the 16 teeny little
screws...well..almost..had one left over (and I thought that was only a male
thing! :=) ) but felt great relief to get it closed again...tentatively
plugged it in and turned it on...dead as a doornail.

I can remember really a digital newsletter once that said that the quickest
way to kill a computer or a digital camera is to spill a drink on it. <sigh>

I awoke at 6 this morning and hit Ebay, trying to decide how much higher to
upgrade, feeling bereft. Bookmarked a bunch for tonight and tomorrow.
Stumbled into the kitchen to fix a cup of tea...and there on the counter was
my poor little dead Oly. What could it be used for?? A planter? A
paperweight?? ("my first digital camera" for the great-grandchildren to
snicker at??) I foldled it and felt sad, flicking it on and off in the hopes
of a flicker..and damned if it didn't turn on and go to town!! It's HAPPY! It
purrs! I've been using it all afternoon! <<<happy again>>>>

So..I guess I have to amend this..you "have done a Susan" if you were stupid
as mud, did something REALLY foolish, but by the grace of God you managed to
pull a rabbit out of the hat and salvaged the situation!!!
Susan
PS I always liked Pepsi better...
