I was out and about until late yesterday and didn't notice until this
morning that my name had come up in connection with a discussion of the
Phoenix 19-35/3.5~4.5 lens and/or stuff made of plastic instead of metal.
I am honored to be considered worthy of quoting, so let me seize upon my
temporary celebrity to add a word or two on both subjects.
The Phoenix WA zoom: Plastic or not, it's well worth the money. I have
never used, or even seen, the all-metal Samyang, so I can't make any sort
of comparison. I have no shortage of good wide prime lenses: Tamron
17/3.5, Zuiko 21/2, Zeiss 28/2.8, and Zuiko 35/2. But when walking around
with the minimum amount of weight, I usually carry just one OM-4Ti, with
MD2, the Phoenix 19-35 and the Zuiko 35-105/3.5~4.
My TOPE 10 was shot with the Zuiko 21/2, partly because the spot I stood to
take the photo was about 15 feet from the car with all the gear. If the
(deleted to preserve anonymity) had been a half mile up a footpath, it most
likely would've been shot with the Phoenix 19-35, and I bet you couldn't
tell the difference -- certainly not at TOPE size. In fact, I can't really
see any difference in 2400 dpi scans, which is the maximum resolution of my
scanner du jour.
As for the metal argument, I'll say this: I am a gun collector,
particularly handguns, and I shoot more ammo than film by a long shot (pun
intended), and a couple of my favorite pistols are Glocks. There's a lot
of Glock parts that aren't metal, but neither I nor the hundreds of police
departments that use Glocks notice or care. It just ain't that big a deal
nowadays. Ask a Corvette owner.
