Well, my friend was taping the meeting as part of a student documentary on post-9/11 public response to the plans for war that she was doing for one of our film classes. The intent wasn't to upset anyone and as soon as it was obvious that some people were getting upset she put away her camera. It was an open, public meeting, though, and neither of us expected anyone to object to it being documented. We've both shot video and stills at a number of local anti-war meetings without incident, but the San Francisco contingent seemed a lot more nervous than the folks up here in the north bay or down in Berkeley. As far as collecting model releases from a crowd of several hundred people, it didn't seem practical or necessary. Usually we just mention that we're shooting footage to whoever is making the announcements when things get started and they ask if anyone has an objection to us collecting footage. That particular night there were several people shooting footage and nobody objected at the announcement, but later in the evening as tensions from the discussion seemed to run high the subject of the video crews in attendance came up and a few people got really upset. As far as the liberties being taken with civil rights and access to due process that are taking place in this country right now, I'm not sure the best course of action in the face of that kind of abuse is to hide and act guilty.

I don't know of anyplace where a photographer can continue to take pictures of people who object and not expect to take the consequences of his rudeness.

Certainly in a country where over a thousand people including citizens have been held incognito without charges for half a year in contravention to the Constitution, people who object are likely to be anxious. Since you were obviously not news reporters either and were not collecting model releases for publication or exhibit, I would wonder why you were taking pictures too.
