Here's my take...

I agree totally with Jan's statement(s) on the pre-flash. The Canon A20
doesn't have a hot shoe, so that won't work.

Whether or not these slaves are 'expensive' depends on your definition of
expensive. If I remember the original email, you were using the HP 315 (and
now trying to use the Canon A20) to fire your monolights, right?

If so, you've already invested a fair amount of $$$ in the studio lighting, so
maybe you should consider the "Wein HS Hot Shoe Slave (150' Range) - for
Digital Camera Systems" -- it's about $70 from B&H, it was designed to handle
the pre-flash of digicams, and it has a side mounted PC terminal that you
could use to trigger the monolights.

Here's a URL for this product at B&H:

work with slaves.

I'd disagree here. I haven't personally used the Wein, but given the almost
constant introduction of new digital-related products and accessories that
photographers can get to integrate their digicams with their existing
equipment, it'd be worth calling B&H or posting a message on the forums at
http://www.dpreview.com or http://www.photo.net to hear what other people have
done with this challenge.

Regards and good luck,
