The focus helicoid of the 100mm lens is optimized for general photography
roughly 10 feet to infinity. The focus helicoid of the 90mm lens is
optimized for use from 1/2 life size to roughly 10 ft. Not that either lens
can't perform the others tasks it's just that the designs was optimized for
a certain distance from the film plane.

I have been using the 100mm as my flower lens for the past year and have
created some sharp images. I also found that can you can make this lens
even more flexible. I used it with a Minolta no. 0 achromat closeup lens to
focus closer without resorting to extension tubes. I've also used it with a
Vivitar 1.5x converter to create a 150mm f3 close focus combination. Using
both together will produce successful images but you can begin to tell some
of the bite is gone.

That being said I shot my first roll with my 90mm macro and found the lens
easier to focus when making flower photographs. I'm eagerly looking forward
to seeing the results on film.
