The proper answer to any question of moderate or greater complexity is, "It 
depends." :-)

DOF is a tool. Use it to achieve a desired result. If there was On True Way, 
lenses wouldn't have aperture adjustments.

I just spent the majority of a dozen rolls of film using the 24 shift at 
hyperfocal, but it also has sweet bokeh when you open it up and get real close. 
(Try a shift lens with an extension tube to get away from the Sick Of Nudging 
The Tripod To Get The Composition I Want blues... :-)
