Regarding the amount of extension, I seem to remember calculating that one
needs around 45mm to go from a 90mm 1:2 to a 90mm 1:1 ; in other words, all
three olympus auto tubes (25+12+7 = 44mm). Or is that wrong?

Is there any reason why I would need the Tamron one specifically?

Only if you are into pain and inconvenience do you need to track it down.
Use whatever extension tubes you own. An auto tube is an auto tube. There
are
no optics nor magic to the one labeled Tamron. With the Tamron tube (like
the
Tamron teleconverters) you hav eto remove the adaptall mount install the
tube
and then attach the adaptall mount to the rear of your tube.

Which model Tamron 90mm do you have? You may want to locate the hood for
it,
which can be more difficult than finding the tube. Bill Barber
