I follow a couple of MB 'boards and your observations are definitely borne
out by their commonts.  Models as recent as 2001 are prone to rust-through,
chintzy fit/finish and bad paint.  It actually sounds like they're
describing mid 80's GM x-bodies ;-).

I own an '86 420SEL (V126) with build quality that was exemplary for its
time.  It was not the highest-tech car on the road at the time, but
certainly one of the safest and best built.  I am not interested in a new
S-class, even if I could afford it.
