I think the classic setup is two lights left and right at 45-degrees
elevation, camera centered vertical and horizontal to the painting. I
suppose you could experiment with a polarizer but I'm not sure its
necessary, probably depends on the texture of the painting surface. When you
get the pictures be sure to post some results for their educational value.
