Generally, all museums close at five, including the Van Gogh, certainly on
Sundays. So you'll need to come back for that some other time.
The city's tourist information site is http://www.iamsterdam.com/.
I'd say you'd take the train from the airport (Schiphol) to Amsterdam
Central Station (which has been converted to a big building site for the
coming five years) and get a map from the tourist information office (called
VVV).
It should be a nice walk towards the 'Nieuwmarkt', and explore the area
around there, it's fairly scenic and has lots of places to eat and drink
(use the 'map' button on the IAMsterdam site, and locate 'Centraal Station'
and 'Nieuwmarkt'). There are a lot of small Chinese-Indonesian places on the
'Zeedijk'.
If you'd walk to Niewmarkt following let's say the 'Oudezijds
Voorburgwal', that will lead you straight throughthe Red Light district. If
youd rather leave that to itself, take the route over 'Geldersekade'. It's
up to your liking.
