After thinking about it overnight I decided to buy one of these this
morning. I remembered last summer making a special trip to Best Buy or
some other store to pick up a SanDisk 2GB Ultra II for non-rebate price
of $40 which was a great price at the time. I tried to buy two but
there was only one left. I'm not sure I really need an 8GB card and am
a little concerned about too many eggs in a single basket but the price
at $50 was too attractive. I hadn't even thought to check Galbraith's
performance data base before I bought it but I'm glad to see that it's
not slower and is at least a little faster than my Ultra II's. But
probably not enough that I'll ever notice it. I've never shot a "burst"
of anything, film or digital. I wonder how its speed would compare if
formatted as FAT16 rather than FAT32?

Maybe the CF manufacturers are finding it hard to move these cards.
After all, how many digital users are there that really need 8GB in a
single package? I've never gotten over 5GB with the 5D covering a
single, day-long event. Maybe a long vacation without laptop or other
backup device?

Price comment: When I went to Adorama's site this morning I didn't use
the link below and the 8GB card in the normal listing was selling for
$89.95 after rebate. Then I tried the link below and found the lower
price. Based on "emailprice" in the link I believe this must be a
special price for the "email specials" subscribers so I signed up for
that service after checking the privacy policy and finding it OK.

Oh, and I now get to pay 8% New York sales tax to B&H and Adorama now
that I'm living in upstate New York. I dramatically reduced my cost of
living by moving here from Boston but sales tax is definitely not part
of the lower cost equation. Watch this thread veer from the title now
that I've mentioned sales taxes. :-)
