I agree with Moose.  No abrasives as there's not likely to be any
corrosion there.

What did you mean by a "remote cord" with the 283?  Something attached 
to the hot shoe or to the PC socket?  If the problem persists I'd try 
firing the flash via a PC cord plugged into the PC socket and see if the 
problem is there as well.  It might help determine whether there's an 
internal electrical connection problem or just external on the hot shoe 
contacts.

A question I don't know the answer to.  What happens to flash function 
if (as happens with some 4Ts) there is a ground problem with the bottom 
plate and its attaching screws?
