An Americanism, perhaps? We also called steel cans coated with tin 'tin cans' and some older folks still use the term for steel cans coated with other things. It may also be slang for a rickety old car.

The first stamped ceilings were un-coated steel. When tin coatings were added to retard rusting, the 'tin ceiling' was born. Tin itself is mechanically unsuited as a material for the stamped panel on its own.
