I fool with a lot of lenses so I purchased a vise for about $40 that will
take out most dents. The problem with the vise is a tendency to push out the
opposite side. I solved this problem by purchasing a large (49mm-55mm for
example) step up ring and cutting clearance slots on each side for the vise.
On the side to be straightened, a piece of the ring must be cut out. On the
other side, only the 55mm threads must be removed to clear the vise body.
This spreads the force over a large area on the side opposite the damage.
This set up will make many dents undetectable.
