Jeff,
Welcome to "the group". You'll probably get a gazillion responses other
than mine. Here's my 2 cents worth.
If you can afford it, buy the OM2000. If the trip is important to you and
you have the $, go ahead and get it.

I have had an OM-2 for 20+ years and bought a used 2-S three years ago.
Neither of the cameras have ever been serviced. My wife and I were able to
take a trip to the Holy Land this year and I took those cameras because they
had always worked. They worked flawlessly.
So why would I suggest you get an OM2000? Because it's "new and so are
you". Just look at one and handle it before buying, then think about my
next paragraph...
You also might seriously consider sending in the OM2n for a CLA (clean,
lube, adjustment). It would make the camera last longer and get it some
attention it surely needs by now. When was the last time you serviced your
car?
Either way, you'll spend about the same money.

As for me, I'd buy a used OM-4 or similar because of the high quality the OM
cameras have. By the way, the OM2000 is made for Olympus by Cosina. Not
necessarily a big deal, just different. An OM2000 is not a "system camera",
the OM-2 through 4's are (winders, motors, interchangeable focus screens,
etc).
Almost all the OM's I own are older than you and I trust them for all my
photos. I also know them. If you don't know or trust your dad's OM-2n too
well, either get it serviced or buy an OM2000.
Hope this gives you some food for thought.

Subject: [OM] Have a 2n, worth om 2000 backup?

Hello All,
I just posted a very question to rec.photo...35m and rec.photo.misc but
i just recently signed up for this list. Anyways, here goes,

Hello,
I am 16 year old aspiring photographer. My dad has an old Olympus Om
2n, a 50mm 1.8 lens, 28 f3.5 lens, 135 3.5 lens, 80 - 200 lens (sigma), 35 -
70 (sigma), flash, etc. I will be taking photo 1 next year in high school,
and I am going to Costa Rica this summer and am really looking forward to
some great picture opportunities. My question is, the om 2000, reasonably
priced around 150 dollars worth getting to backup my 2n? Or even become the
main body??? The 2n is a great little camera, but it's old and I really
wouldn't want it to bail on me this summer or next year for school. Even
though it appears to be in excellent condition, would I gain anything (spot
/ avg metering) to make it a worth while body addition? Am I better off not
even bothering with anyother body? Any thoughts as to if it's worth
investing in one with all those lenses and accessories I already have?
Thanks a lot for your input,

-
