The main circuit was smashed because the cover flexed so much it was pushed 
into 
the circuit and so broke it.  A stiff cover may have transmitted more shock but 
the 
circuit would have remained intact.  A cover should be a lot cheaper to replace 
than 
a main circuit board.

No, the covers are plastic because they are cheaper to make IMO.

The pilot of an A10 is apparently protected from ground fire by a sort of 
bathtub 
made of titanium.
