I can't add much here that wasn't already covered.
If you do B+W you don't have to worry about the light color temperature.
Try window light for effect.
If you don't have a bare bulb flash you will not get the real benefit from
a softbox. Use umbrellas and save money.
Try all the set ups suggested they are all good.
Read. The library usually has some books on studio set ups.
