I DOESN'T always go on the left.  They are marked as to which end points to
the camera.  Some are marked so the knob goes on the right, some are marked
so the knob goes on the left. They're not just marked backwards either, they
are really two symetrically opposite parts.

I don't think it's that easy. While you can reverse the mount you risk
minor damage. there is a small detent in the ring that drops into a slot
on the lens. This prevents the lens from slipping out when the knob is
loosened. When you reverse the ring the detent may scratch the lens
since it no longer lines up with the slot. Knob goes on the left. And I
think this mount also fits the telescoping extension tube.
