[OM] Why am I so prejudiced against metal?

>From the reactions my remarks have educed, it's apparent that I've been
giving metal-bodied cameras an unfair rap.

I've been trying to figure out why, and I think I know.

When I was in college 30+ years ago, I owned a Nikon F. One Saturday morning
I loaded it and discovered that the wind lever wouldn't advance. So instead
of spending a pleasant day taking photos, I had to run into DC and have it
fixed.

It turned out that the takeup spool was bent! It was as if The Jolly Green
Giant had shoved his thumb into the camera and forced the spool into a
"swayback" shape.

That camera had never been dropped, or abused in any way I was aware of.
So... if metal camera parts can "spontaneously" bend, then what's going to
happen to them if they're dropped on a hard surface?

Anybody have any ideas about what happened? 30+ years later, I still want to
know.
