I had a Zuiko 600mm for a while but sent it back as it had a defect in the
focusing mechanism. It would not focus properly beyond about 60 feet. I have
a 1000mm f-11 mirror lens (Celestron), a 350mm f2.8 that can get to 1000mm
with 1.4 and 2x multipliers, a Zeiss 100-500 zoom, a Vivitar 120-600 zoom,
and an Exacta 650-1300 zoom. They all have their places in the grand scheme
of things but are all slow at 1000mm plus. Lens quality gets interesting
when shooting things a long way off because atmospheric conditons become a
significant factor in image quality loss. Heat waves and wind (with or
without dust) become major factors when working at 700 to 800 yards. I work
in Yellowstone some and it's hard to impress anyone there with big lenses as
there are so many around. That's how you find a Grizzly....just look for
$300,000 worth of long glass all pointed in the same direction. I notice
more people staring at the 350 than anything else I use. People use some
marvelous equipment in Yellowstone and some even know what they are doing.
The real pros spend a lot of time and effort to get those fantastic shots
they publish. I usually work for relatively short periods of time and take
what I can get. Still may have to try the Zuiko 1000 sometime........need to
find one cheap.  /jim

Until...

The day you set one up on a big tripod, mount an OM-4(Ti) with
MD and crank out the shade.

That puppy is HUGE!  You'll draw crowds and scare little
children.

You could do what I did with the 600/6.5.  We were vacationing
down in the Smokeys and one night, in Gatlinburg, I hauled the
kit down to the main strip, walked into the middle of the street
and shot pictures from the double-yellow line.  Between the
Bogen 3221 tripod, and the huge lens, I was stopping traffic.

Ok, the traffic was already stopped...  But it sounded good.
