Here's a shot I took looking down into a flower in bright sun. The 
central part in direct sun is so bright that the yellowish color around 
it on the petals is sunlight reflected from it. I don't know what the 
dynamic range is in the RAW file, but I know the JPEG didn't capture the 
whole range. In fact, I found getting the whole range right, with good 
detail in the highlights and still retaining reasonable brightness in 
the petals and the subtle shading of the veins impossible, even directly 
from RAW.  I could get in the ballpark, but not what quite I wanted.

With RAW, however, one can extract two (or more) images with different 
effective exposures and shoulder or toe characteristics. So I combined 
two different "exposures" to create one which holds all the detail on 
both ends.. You may or may not like this particular result, but I hope 
it shows the possibilities
