I think you are stuck with that price range. Film scanners are more  
money than flatbed scanners and really high quality flat beds capable  
of good slide scans cost more than $300. The closest one may be the  
Canon CanoScan 9950F which is $349 at B and H. You may find it a  
little cheaper elsewhere.

There is an excellent review here in which it is compared to a Nikon  
film scanner and it does not give up much to it. Plus you can scan up  
to 12 slides at once. Can't beat cheap and saving your time too. Most  
of us with film scanners really hate the time involved.
