Hah! Way to much trouble to explain all the little stuff I did.
But I can tell you how to do it right in the first place. Your selection
has to go accurately along a natural break in the image, like the
skyline. In this image, where trees have sky showing through, you would
also have to use some selection by color. Not having seen the sky in
color, I'm not sure, but that might catch most of the sky along the
skyline, leaving the rest to be picked up with lasso and/or rectangular
selection tool.
