Ralf, it seems to me that you did it by applying a curve which looks like
a
"tick", the square root symbol, or in ASCII-art, something like this:

.

That accounts for the darkest tones having been lightened so much.

That was I thought at first, but I can't recreate the image (the darker
areas become red instead of grey). And another thing, I remember that I
was playing with merging/combining 2 images into one.
Any other hint?
