I'm reminded that the Polaroid camera had an ultra-sonic AF system. Tick
Tick Tick.  It worked remarkably well. I'm also reminded of the AF systems
of the '80s which used an IR emitter and detector. These also worked very
well (and fast) in total visual darkness.
The old Olympus IS-3 with G40 flash is a wonderful available-darkness camera
and will focus faster in these conditions than anything else I've ever
seen--including Canon's latest/greatest.
