The local unemployment rate is 9.2% which is higher than the national
average which is about 8.5% at the moment. I won't say there are no
tent cities (I know Flagler county, Florida is at 14% unemployment) but
I surely haven't seen any... and I just left Florida 4 weeks ago.

I think your worries are entirely misplaced. Come and bring plenty of
money. There are plenty of people who will be most happy to help you
spend it and are polite enough not to bite the hand that's helping to
feed them. Seriously, many of the places you are likely to visit are
largely supported by tourist dollars. The problem right now is that
there are not enough of you. Come on over!!!

So, what do you think you'd like to see? And how do you want to get
there? By air or by car? I wouldn't recommend rail. There is some
rail travel in the US but it's limited and expensive. I consider myself
a modest expert now having just circumnavigated most of the country by
car. 11,508 miles in about 45 days. Cost was approx. $8,000 for all
food, fuel and lodging for two people and my 23.5 miles per gallon
Buick. But gas is cheaper today than it was then and car rental is
probably low cost right now. Lodging wouldn't cost any more to include
a couple young kids.
