Back on my Harp. That matters not a whit - unless you drop your interest in getting the best sharpness/resolution out of
your camera.
The combination of JPEGs and FastStone editing simply throws away resolution your lenses have delivered and your camera
has captured.
Unless/until you retract you statement that started all this, "For some time I have been somewhat disappointed by the
amount of image detail provided by OM digital cameras.", you are obliged to eschew tools and techniques that cause lower
resolution. :-)
I noticed that nobody mentioned Lightroom. Why not?
Now that we have established that that wasn't true, and there have been many posts about LR, pro and con, its time to
admit that tastes vary. You aren't going to find a consensus here.
I thoroughly dislike editing in LR, but love the catalog, and especially the map feature. There are a bunch of
converter/editors with a similar interface to LR: Oly Viewer 3, DxO, RawTherapee and SilkyPix, among others. There are
differences, with SilkyPix particularly obscure to me, but the basic UI design is similar.
Several people here dislike PS, while I like it best of anything I've tried. How much of that is familiarity and how
much the extra functionality I live on, I don't know. Chuck prefers ACR direct, without the LR version UI. He uses it
for most of his editing. I use it only for a couple of basic things, preferring to do the rest in PS.
All of these products, used with Raw, are capable of doing a better job than what you have been using. LR is a decent
choice to start with, solid, stable, and used by millions, so there are endless free tutorials available.
I still have questions in my head, but they can stay there for now.
When that stops, you'll be dead. :-)
