Cleaning marks and other fine scratches on a front element that degrade the
image can be helped by wiping it over with a tiny smear of matt black poster
paint on a cloth so that it works into the scratches. The light streak
caused by a split close up lens is similarly fixed by painting the 'cut'
piece with the same paint.
