They have virtually identical optical formulas, with just slight curvature
variations in two elements to probably accomodate the light splitting prism in
the AF model.  What effect that beam splitter has on optical performance is
subject to speculation.  I have a loose non-AF 35-70mm f/4, but it would be a
waste of time to test it without getting it repaired first.  In the past it
has not be financially feasible to repair it, but the value of the f/4 zoom is
increasing and that might change soon.  Even if I tested it, the performance
difference might not be visually detectable.  So there are higher testing
priorities at present.
