<< I was wondering if the TTL flash system compensates for the use of a
diffuser all by itself. As I understand, the shutter will stay open until
the film recieves enough light, so I guess in theory it does. But is the
shutter speed displayed in the viewfinder (1/60) correct in this case?

Thanks in advance! Steve>>

Yes it does. Also the regular auto.
The flash is a lot shorter than the 1/60 sec.
so you are ok there. See the acceptation with the OM2
from Paul Schings.
If you know the amount of light your diffuser eats,
open that many stops and the flash will fire
the same amount as the original.
If your diffuser changes the way the light is
bounced around the room the compensation
may change. i.e.: wide angle.
