Macro lenses: pros: flattest field, many work well from 1:1 or 1:2 to
infinity
cons: expensive; light loss; may still require additional
extension

Extension: pros: convenient, relatively inexpensive compared to true
macro lenses
cons: light loss, loss of field flatness compared to macros

Diopters: pros; cheap, convenient, light, no significant light loss
cons: loss of field flatness, loss of sharpness at corners

Another option would be lens reversal. I'm not too familiar with results
using that technique. I suspect it would be somewhat better than putting a
standard lens on extension tubes, but not as good as a true macro lens.
