Joe Rosenthal. And he says that he did not pose it or recreate it -
definite - and seems annoyed that such ideas have become 'common knowledge.
Apparently, a smaller flag had already been raised and he caught those guys
raising a better one as ordered after most people had left - their officer
wanted the Japanese to be able to see that Mt. Suribachi had been captured.
It took six marines because the pole was a heavy iron pipe and the great
composition was natural/accidental as he'd already taken his position -
being short he stood on some sandbags. He then took a couple more insurance
shots of marines posed under the raised flag and did not even know which
shot was used until later. The posing of the second and third shots may
have led to the 'recreation' legend.
He was a civilian working for Associated Press and made nothing on the shot
beyond wages.
