Well, I'm no expert, but the way I do it is: use a 28mm lens (this gives a
perspective quite like a P&S lens), fast (ISO400 or 800) print film, before
the event starts I make sure the camera is correctly set on auto, no
compensation etc., stop down to f/8 or f/16, preset focus on hyperfocal
(lots of DOF with a 28mm) based on the size of the room and my distance
from the action, if needed I use T32 flash on full auto (with OM4) and fire
away. Indoors I always use bounce flash, T32 is powerful enough for most
occassions. And as Tom S. mentioned, burn plenty of film. First it
increases your chance of getting a good shot, second, people quickly get
used to it and start behaving more naturally. And if all else fails, get an
IS series camera, or a P&S - Olympus makes some of the finest P&S cameras
around.
