Yup, when I was looking at very compact cameras to give to my son for
his birthday, the Optio S3 &4 were non-starters for simple performance
reasons. dpreview had this to say about the lens:

-Lens softness, especially at corners and bottom of frame
-Some chromatic aberrations visible (although average for this size of
camera)
-Some vignetting / light fall off in right-hand corner of frame at
maximum aperture.

The first one alone put it off the list for me. I suspect it is the
floating lens elements that jump up out of the way when it closes. It
can't be easy to make an arrangement like that really precise.

The little Olys made the final 3, but were nixed by the recipient based
on size and style. He ended up with a Can*n S410 and I must say it did
an excellent job for him on his OZ trip. I was just so pleased to have
the one of my sons who has never shown any interest at all in
photography ask for a camera for his birthday. And then he came back
with quite a few very good images. I guess he was listening after all?

I agree too that it's not all about number of megapixels, there are a
lot of factors that go together to create good image quality. I couldn't
see any point in the 5mp version of the same camera for the intended use.
